I've Been Thinking About Experiencing God

What does it mean to Experience God? It’s about developing a keen awareness of how God’s Love is working in us, through us and all around us. It’s about how God is constantly inviting each one of us to be part of how God is at work in our world.

The first step in “Experiencing God” is to realize that God truly, deeply loves each one of us! God wants a very authentic, personal relationship with each person. That’s why God sent Jesus to live on this earth! And even with that amazing, historic intervention, we humans still become creatures of habit. We take God’s presence for granted. It’s like putting our faith in a box, and only pulling it out when we need something. However, God wants an ongoing, integrated, vibrant relationship with each and every person on this earth.

In the 20+ years since my ordination, I’ve learned a lot about communication, and about relationships between people. A meaningful conversation only happens between two or more people, not on a solo basis. If you’re constantly talking to yourself, and never to another person, come and see me!

Without meaningful conversation, there can be no deepening of any relationship. We acknowledge that truth when we towards healthy friendships, marriages, and teamwork. The same is true with God! God wants to converse with us, to create relationships that are deeply significant and helpful.

While few people never experience God’s voice out loud, many have been thrilled to gain a deeper relationship with the Divine. God’s intentions are heard and experienced by the nudging of the Holy Spirit. This happens through interpersonal relationship, as we read through the Bible, spend time in prayer, worship, when we are quiet, and when are open to God during tough circumstances.

One guarantee when wanting to experience God, is that we will always be invited to exercise and stretch our faith. We will be faced with challenging questions that we at first want to avoid: “Do I really trust God? Am I willing to let God guide me? Is God able to handle this? Do I even want to give up control and let God be at the center of my life? Where is God when we need help?”

How we respond determines whether we will be involved in something “God-sized,” or something by which we control our own journey and miss the Grace that God wants to provide. Maybe we don’t want to give up on faith completely, but we don’t know how to move forward. Staying in the same place, however, and expecting a different outcome not only doesn’t work; it isn’t healthy!

What can we do when we want to avoid answering those tough questions, but we still want to be faithful? We get help! We need to take responsibility for moving ahead in our faith, but we don’t have to do it alone. God didn’t create us in isolation, nor does God intend us to move forward alone. That’s why Paul wrote so many letters to the various early churches, and visited them as often as possible. It’s important to gather together in a group for support, for help, encouragement, for cheer and laughter... and to grow in faith! Do you feel unenthusiastic about your relationship with God? Were you hurt long ago by the hypocrisy of a congregation, and because of that, you gave up on anything to do with any church? Are you angry with God? Maybe you don’t want to give up on God, and you’re afraid that God will give up on you? Are you excited about your faith and want a more genuine relationship with the Divine, but don’t know how to get there?
